Current Traffic Advisories

Full Closure of Southbound I-680 in Pleasanton between I-580/I-680 Connector and Koopman Road RESCHEDULED to April 26-29, 2024
(In Case of Rain, Closure Will be Rescheduled)

PLEASANTON / ALAMEDA COUNTY – The full weekend closure of southbound Interstate 680 between the I-580/I-680 connector in Pleasanton and Koopman Road in Sunol has been RESCHEDULED. The closure will take place Friday, April 26 through Monday morning, April 29.

The closure had initially been scheduled to take place April 12-15, but has been RESCHEDULED. The planned closure April 12-15 will not take place.

Southbound Interstate 680 will be closed between the I-580/I-680 Connector in Pleasanton and Koopman Road in Sunol from 9 p.m. Friday, April 26 through 4 a.m. Monday morning, April 29, 2024.

During the closure, contractor will replace a portion of the existing deteriorated roadway with new pavement on southbound I-680, between the I-580/I-680 Connector and Koopman Road.

The work will repair deteriorating existing pavement and enhance motorist safety while reducing the number of nightly closures needed on the project.

The I-680 freeway will be closed in the southbound direction between the I-580/I-680 Connector and Koopman Road from 9:00 p.m. Friday, April 26 to 4:00 a.m. the following Monday, April 29.

This is the last full weekend closure of southbound I-680 in the area between I-580/I-680 and Koopman Road. Work will continue on southbound I-680 through the year at night under typical lane closures.

The project stretches from Sunol and Pleasanton to the south to San Ramon to the north. There will be full weekend closures of southbound I-680 in San Ramon later this year.

This weekend closure will rehabilitate the pavement an entire year ahead of schedule, giving motorists a smooth ride starting in spring 2024 instead of having to drive on deteriorated pavement until 2025. It also will accomplish the amount of work that otherwise would require an estimated 40 nighttime closures.

In the case of rain or unanticipated developments, the closures will be rescheduled and the public will be notified.

Portable changeable message signs will be placed prior to closure advising motorists of this closure and will remain in effect throughout the weekend while work is being performed.

Northbound I-680 will remain open and will not be affected by the closure.

Caltrans is aware that the closures will impact the motoring public and measures are being taken to minimize inconvenience. Caltrans thanks the motoring public in advance for your patience as we work to improve I-680.

California Highway Patrol officers and message signs will be on hand to guide motorists. Detours for the closures are as follows:

  2. Motorists on southbound I-680 near the Benicia Bridge can take I-780 west to I-80 to southbound I-880.

Caltrans Repaving Northbound Interstate 680 Between Sunol and San Ramon

Caltrans is embarking upon a major improvement project that will repave northbound Interstate 680 and replace entire sections of the roadway to enhance safety and provide a smoother ride to motorists.

The project will take place on I-680 between Koopman Road in Sunol and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon.

Caltrans will need to close freeway lanes and entire sections of the freeway to do the work. The work is scheduled to begin in December, starting in the Sunol area and working northward, and will last about a year and a half.

Additionally, in 2023, work will necessitate closing I-680 for 72 hours on the following holidays:

  1. Martin Luther King holiday (mid-January 2023)
  2. President’s Day (mid-February 2023)
  3. Memorial Day (late May 2023)

These closures will shorten the time needed to complete the project. Caltrans will provide additional holiday closure information as soon it becomes available. The public will be notified in advance via traffic advisories, a webpage and social media.

The first part of the project is located in the City of Sunol.

To perform this work, Caltrans has scheduled to close northbound Interstate 680 overnight from the I-680/State Route 84 junction to the Sunol Boulevard exit starting in December 2022 and anticipated to complete in April 2023.

All lanes of northbound I-680 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend closures are not anticipated, barring unforeseen circumstances. All work is weather-dependent.

Caltrans is aware that the closures will impact the motoring public and every step is being taken to minimize inconvenience.

California Highway Patrol officers and message signs will be on hand to guide motorists. Detours for the December closures are as follows:
